IRON POUR JUNE 8th

In this 10 day residency workshop, participants will learn to make resin bonded sand molds to create cast iron sculptures. The workshop includes demonstrations throughout the week in making two or more part sand molds. We will begin with a discussion of projects the participants will be making and will continue with individual instruction as to how to create the sculptures intended. Participants will be involved with all aspects of mold making, breaking iron and coke (fuel), culminating in an iron pour. This process is rigorous and demanding, but no one will be required to do work beyond his or her capacity. Each participant is allotted up to 100 pounds of metal. No previous casting experience required.

INTRODUCTION TO GLASSBLOWING

June 20 - 22
9am - 4pm
$250 + materials
Limit: 6 students

We will begin by taking time to familiarize students with the various uses and functions of studio equipment and tools. This will lead into development of the fundamentals of working with glass: gathering and marvering, turning and an understanding heat distribution. These skills will be approached through demonstrations and repetition while producing fun objects like flowers and paperweights. The following day we will introduce the bubble and the process by which, working with a team, one can take an amorphous gather of glass and turn it into a straight-sided, flat bottomed cylinder. On the third day students will be shown why proficiency in the cylinder is essential and practice subtle variations in this process to achieve other forms.
