Studio will be open additional hours for participants from 4pm to 8pm each day
This marble carving residency will offer instruction in marble carving for a mixed group of participants from beginners to more experienced sculptors who wish to learn and improve their techniques. We will cover the three main phases of marble sculpture: roughing out, modeling with chisels and finishing. All tools and techniques will be demonstrated. For the more advanced participants we will work with the "machinetta" (pointing device) to reproduce a plaster model in marble using the Italian pointing method for transferring accurate measurements. Everyone must bring a model in fired clay or plaster of the sculpture they wish to carve in marble. Each participant should also bring their own tools and a list is supplied for first time carvers. Pneumatic hammers and tools are permitted and SAW will supply compressed air and attachments for air hammers. Both abstract and figurative work is accepted, but please be sure that your maquettes are suitable to carve at your level of ability. Vermont marble will be available and may be purchased according to the size required to make the sculpture and participants are welcome to bring their own marble if they prefer. Lunch breaks will happen at Noon. Rustic accommodations will be provided as well as board for this week-long residency.

This class will be a good introduction into the forging of silver such as jewelry and silverware. In this workshop students will be exploring basic forging techniques with copper. Students will be learning about tools and processes in forging copper. The process of forging copper is very much like blacksmithing steel. Because of copper’s inherent plasticity, we will be forging this metal cold. The projects we will be making will cover the basic principles offering. This class is recommended for ages 17 and up.

This class is open to artists of all disciplines and requires no prior experience in the medium of glass.

August 15 - 17
8am - 5pm
$350 + materials
Limit: 4 students
GLO invites artists from any discipline to attempt to translate their ideas into glass. During this workshop the entire facility and technical staff of the studio will be made available to each artist in turn. The first day will be spent familiarizing the group with the studio and interacting with hot glass. Through gathering, rolling, dripping, cutting, pushing and pulling hot glass participants will gain a sense of this rich medium. That afternoon we will come together as a group and discuss our ideas in order to coordinate an effective plan of action. During the following two days each participant will be given four hours during which they can push the capabilities of the facility and the staff to develop their experiment. All artists are encouraged to participate in or watch each session or can use that time to further preparations for their own ideas. It is important to remember that this is an experimental workshop and that success will not be measured by the production of a finished piece, but rather achievement of an honest experience and an understanding of how your ideas and the medium of glass will align.
