One Day Intro to Welding

$150.00

In this intensive workshop participants will observe and practice several fundamental techniques used in metal fabrication. Time will be split between demonstration and assisted hands-on practice. The instructor will demonstrate the safe and proper use of a variety of equipment, then students will choose metal scrap material to create a sculpture of their own design. Techniques covered include heating, bending, and cutting using an oxy-acetylene torch, cutting using a plasma cutter, and MIG welding.

This one-day, six-hour workshop is available for beginners with no prior experience but is also useful for people with some prior experience as well.

Students must wear closed-toed shoes, have hair tied, a hat or bandana (recommended), and long pants. Wear natural-fibered clothing and avoid synthetic fabrics.

Bring your own lunch and water bottle!

Instructor Bios:

Stanton Sears is a sculptor and a professor of art at Macalester College, St Paul.  He holds degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and Penn State.  In addition to the fine arts, his training has included significant study in architecture and landscape architecture. He is a very experienced educator with a contagious passion for the arts.

Riley Fichter is an artist-educator who grew up along the watershed of the Wisconsin River near Baraboo, Wisconsin. He received his BFA-Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and has recently received his MFA-Sculpture from the University of Notre Dame. He has always been enraptured by the power of nature’s forces, and his observations of the ebb and flow of various ecosystems have shaped his art making practice. Riley makes sculpture, video, and installation-based artwork that capture his fascination with nature, the material compositions of earthly bodies, and the vastly intertwined relationships of life and matter. He is looking forward to continuing to make artwork that intimately examines these concepts.

There is a 25% cancellation fee for all workshops and classes if requested with two weeks of prior notice. Deposits and payments are nonrefundable within two weeks of the scheduled date.
