Music on the Hill - The Laura Leigh Band

The second of three musical celebrations to take place at the top of Cary Hill Sculpture Park this season.
Guests can enjoy fabulous panoramic views of the surrounding countryside while relaxing in the cool evening air, surrounded by great food, music, and friends.

The Laura Leigh Band will begin performing at 5 PM.

Laura Leigh is a multi instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and story teller from upstate NY. From the sweeping landscapes of farm country, Laura's voice echoes old timey Appalachian mountain music with early day country  ballads, and a big old love for rock and roll.  Her songs are authentic tales of small-town USA through a lighthearted lens that is emotional, nostalgic, and emotional. Beginning her music career playing accordion in various bands in the Hudson Valley including Mister Roper, The Roadside Blues Band, Wise Roots, Swampfoot, and more- Laura released her first solo album, "Livin' In Cambridge" in 2021. This album paints pictures of the small town she grew up in with both light and dark tones, and explores the feelings of reinventing yourself in the place of your roots. The record is available on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, and Bandcamp. She is now working on a project called Rock City Junction with Denise Parent (The Deadbeats, Brown Eyed Women) and David Chapman (Cold Flavor Repair, Rivergrass).

Food will be available for purchase.
Local craft beers and ciders from R.S. Taylor & Sons Brewery will also be available.

This year, the NY / VT Residency will culminate in a show at Collar Works in Troy, NY on July 28, 2023.

https://collarworks.org

This includes no application fee, free lodging, fully catered meals (satisfying almost any diet), travel reimbursement (and assistance for those without a vehicle), and most significantly, SAW offers a variety of facilities including blacksmithing, glass, ceramics, foundry, screen printing, woodworking, stone carving, and welding with access to basic instruction and support for those wishing to deepen and develop their skills and practice.

Eligible artists must be 21 years or older, have an individual income of $50,000 or less. They must prove residence in New York or Vermont.

This program also offers a variety of opportunities for professional development! These opportunities include an open studio, artist talk, exhibition space for pop-up shows, studio visits with invited artists and curators from the area, and a group exhibition and catalog.

The artists’ collective work will be exhibited in Upstate New York with an opening where all media is celebrated. These artists will create work from painting to performance, writing, sculpture, music, and others. The exhibition is where this body of work will be galvanized and help define the arts in this region, enhancing our collective cultural identity. This collection of artists will see themselves as a part of this region while spawning new opportunities and growth for themselves through this project. Our vision is that the participants of the project will build new connections, collaborations, and work together after the residency concludes.

Music on the Hill with The Figgs

The first of three musical celebrations to take place at the top of Cary Hill Sculpture Park this season.
Guests can enjoy fabulous panoramic views of the surrounding countryside while relaxing in the cool evening air, surrounded by great food, music, and friends.

The Figgs will kick-off a live performance at 5 PM.

The tried and true band The Figgs, which has a worldwide fan base, a hearty discography, and has toured and recorded several times with the legendary Graham Parker, celebrated the year 2013 by turning 25. This occasion was made even more special by the release of “1,000 People Grinning: The Figgs Anthology”. It’s one of the band’s greatest achievements to date. And that says a lot as the Figgs (Mike Gent, Pete Donnelly and Pete Hayes) have been playing together since the trio was in high school in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Since the rock outfit’s inception in 1987 the band has spent the better part of the past 25 years touring, recording and working on a variety of acclaimed side projects.

David Smith Inspired Welding Workshop
Apr

3:30 PM15:30

David Smith Inspired Welding Workshop

David Smith is considered to be one of the most important American artists and the first to make sculptures by welding steel. Smith trained as a welder in an automobile factory in Indiana and later studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City. He began welding sculptures after seeing an example of a welded steel sculpture by Pablo Picasso. In 1940, Smith moved full-time to Bolton Landing, in the Adirondack Mountains, where he built himself a home and workspaces. In this setting, his sculpture gradually became larger and more abstract. He incorporated found metal elements and parts of discarded machinery and began arranging his sculptures on the rolling hills of his property, like family groups or rows of crops. Sometimes, he would drive them to the local dock and photograph them against Lake George and the surrounding mountains. Dialogue with nature became an integral part of Smith’s artistic practice.

Each of us can open our minds and put to practice what David Smith brought to life in his work. The David Smith residency invites artists to come together and create their own sculptures. In this intensive workshop participants will observe and practice several fundamental techniques used in metal fabrication. Time will be split between demonstration and assisted hands-on practice. The instructor will demonstrate the safe and proper use of various equipment. Students will then choose metal scrap material to create a sculpture of their design. Techniques covered include MIG welding, heating, bending, and cutting using an oxy-acetylene torch, and cutting using a plasma cutter.

This three-day, eighteen-hour workshop is intended for beginners with no prior experience but is also appropriate for people with some previous experience as well. Space is limited to six students with a minimum age of 21.

Working in conjunction with The Hyde Collection, Salem Art Works invites you to attend our three-day welding workshop. Housing and meals are available for an additional cost based on availability. The dates are Friday, September 8th, 2023, thru Sunday, September 10th.

Artist Reception for Friedrich Gross at North Main Gallery

Friday, November 18, 2022 from 5 - 7 pm, join us as we celebrate the art of Friedrich Gross at North Main Gallery.

Friedrich Gross, a Swiss-born artist, got his start as a house painter in Zurich before immigrating to the United States and moving into the NYC art world. He painted controversial murals on city buildings, flipped SOHO studios, and showcased his art at local galleries. Over the years, Friedrich evolved and expanded his art from painting houses to paining furniture, panels, and canvases. He also began drawing, sculpting, and etching. In the late 1980's, Friedrich left the city and moved to the green mountains of Vermont where he built a farm and raised a flock of animals.

Today, Friedrich's art is honest and centers around his domestic life. His whimsical paintings are a combination of folklore, myth and fantasy and evoke a deep sympathetic response that has universal appeal. While this pictures illuminate the tales and fables that inspired them, each painting stands alone as an intriguing and magical vision.

Mac's Steel Artist Residency Pop Up Show

Saturday November 5, 2022 Mac Steel will be hosting a pop-up show for the Mac Steel Artist Residency’s inaugural artists, Anthony Cafritz and Richard Criddle.

Mac Steel is located at 296 N Main St., Rutland, VT.

Mac Steel is offering artists the opportunity to utilize and explore a fifty-acre scrap steel yard in Rutland, Vermont. Mac Steel allows resident artists the time to imagine and create from mountains of discarded and scrapped objects from the immediate area and the Northeast Corridor.

For the first time, two artists will make this dream residency a reality over a three-week period spanning from Friday, September 30 thru October 21, 2022. Each artist will push their own boundaries of what is possible and foray into the unknown.

Shards of material from industry, agriculture, and domestic life will immerse the artists, fueling the potential for innovation, discovery, and growth. These piles of scrap material, like mounds of broken words or phrases, resonate with the last 160 years of human intent. Every day different material arrives and the landscape and offerings are forever changing.

Artists Anthony Cafritz and Richard Criddle have been selected for the inaugural residency. Anthony Cafritz is an artist who works in all media, and the founder of Salem Art Works in Salem, New York.

Richard Criddle also works in all media, and recently retired as a Chief Preparator at the world-renowned contemporary art destination Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.

The residency at Mac will culminate in a one-day exhibition on-site at Mac Steel on November 5, from 2 - 4 pm, as well as a group shows thru Salem Art Works on North Main Gallery, 196 N Main St, Salem, NY on Thursday, December 15, 2022.
