Exhibition Reception

The US/UK symposium provides artists with the facilities and resources to explore and push the boundaries of cast-iron sculpture. Artists must go through a competitive application process to be accepted to the event and this year’s group includes exceptionally talented artists from around the U.S. and Europe. During the first part of the symposium the artists will construct resin-bonded sand molds—its an opportunity for artists to hone their technique, develop their ideas, and experiment with material. The molds will be filled with molten iron during the culminating iron pour (Friday, June 19th). The following days artists will break open the molds and hold a reception for the Barn II exhibition of contemporary cast iron sculpture. Concurrent exhibitions will open in SAW’s visitor center and downtown Salem. Live music by The Woodshed Boys will follow at 9pm.

The public is invited through out the symposium to learn about casting iron, contemporary sculpture and meet the participating artists. Scratch block molds will be available during the pour for individuals to make their own cast iron sculptures. These open face molds can be scratched into easily to create a variety of designs and textures.
The scratch-blocks will be filled with molten iron during the day's pour and can be taken home when they cool.
